Welcoming home a new generation of urban residents with a century of history

Increasing demand for housing in Kansas City’s urban core has sparked a swell of development, challenging building owners, developers, and designers to think creatively about how they can meet this growing need. Helix has partnered with Cordish Company to transform the Midland office building into The Midland Lofts, Kansas City’s newest high-quality affordable housing.

Regarded as an “underutilized historic jewel,” the Midland building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The defining exterior characteristics will be preserved and enhanced where needed, leaving the most dramatic transformation to occur within the building’s interiors.

The common spaces, which are being developed by RD Interior Design, will blend the building’s history with upscale materials. Inside the apartments, Helix used a palette of light finishes and woods to give each unit an airy, Scandinavian feel that embraces the natural light coming from the windows. With its connection to a popular concert venue, special attention to the acoustics ensures that the units are guarded against excessive noise.

All of The Midland Loft’s units will be reserved for renters earning up to 80 percent of the median family income, bringing much-needed affordable housing to Kansas City.

A plethora of amenity spaces will promote interaction between residents. Whether they are socializing in the community kitchen, collaborating in the co-working space, or socializing on the large rooftop deck, residents will be able to find a space that fits their preference. The Midland Lofts will also offer unique amenities, such as a music room and a quiet room for yoga or meditation.
