DEKC 2024: Helix brings home AIA KC Design Excellence Award
Each year, the Kansas City design community gathers to honor outstanding projects from local firms. This year, Helix is proud to announce that one of our projects was recognized with an AIA Kansas City Design Excellence award, recognizing our commitment to impactful and meaningful design.
The Crosswalks
The Crosswalks received a Citation Award in the Extra-Large category. Located at the intersection of Armour and Troost, The Crosswalks redefines an area historically affected by racial divides and urban decline. The buildings all celebrate each neighborhood’s unique history and promotes an inclusive and vibrant community.
“The final outcome is an architectural and urban grouping reclaiming this intersection as a new destination for housing and urban renewal.”
“This project brief is fascinating and somewhat of a dream commission as it has four buildings at an intersection where each corner is geographically part of a different neighborhood all with unique identities, communities, and even elected representatives. The jury was intrigued with the design team’s process of engaging with these various city reps for the four neighborhoods and community groups. These four buildings curiously have scale and details in common, yet they each have a distinct identity subtly representing the four neighborhood context ”
