Helix Principal Bryan Gross, AIA Honored with University of Kansas Distinguished Alumni – Lifetime Achievement Award
Helix Principal Bryan Gross, AIA received the 2021 Distinguished Alumni – Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Design (ArcD). The award recognizes ArcD alumni who have realized outstanding success in their distinguished careers.
In his nomination letter, KU ArcD Adjunct Professor Todd Achelpohl, AIA noted, “Bryan is incredibly persistent, both in his ability to work but also in his personal strength. Bryan is not wired to take shortcuts or to conduct his work in nothing but the most disciplined and design-focused fashion.”
Bryan graduated from the School of Architecture and Design in 1980 with a Bachelor of Environmental Design (with highest distinction) and in 1982 with a Bachelor of Architecture (with highest distinction). From there, he attended the History and Theory Program at the Architectural Association in London, receiving a Graduate Diploma.
This is not the first time that Bryan has received accolades from the ArcD program. As a student, Bryan was awarded the Thayer Medal for Design Excellence and the Ewart Traveling Scholarship. He also received the Student Medal from the American Institute of Architects for attaining the highest level of scholastic and design achievement during his undergraduate studies.
Bryan’s notable career is decorated with projects that represent an unwavering commitment to design excellence and sustainable design. His work has received some of the most prestigious honors in the industry, including:
- Society for College and University Planning, Excellence Awards, Honorable Mention, Excellence in Architecture – University of Kansas Medical Center, Health Education Building (2020)
- The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies, American Architecture Award – University of Kansas Medical Center, Health Education Building (2019)
- Top rankings in the annual Architect50 by Architect magazine – #26 in Design (2019), #39 in Sustainability (2012)
- Missouri Bank – Architectural Record, Good Design is Good Business Award (2012)
- The School of Nursing and Student Community Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston – AIA COTE Top Ten Green Project (2006)
- Winning entry in the national design competition for the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art (1992)
